Singalong Adventures!

// April 12th, 2010 // No Comments » // Feature

I have the coolest friends. I really do. The geekiest too.

My friend Amber has a Life List, where she ticks off things she wants to do before she kicks the bucket. She’s done things like getting a tattoo of a feather on her foot, making a blueberry pie from blueberries she handpicked, and hiking in the rainforest. She wants to do things like “memorize ten inspiring works of poetry” and “own a 100% sustainable, zero-impact beach house, with room for a dozen friends.” Some of the items are a little bit crazy and a lotta bit fun, but all of them are achievable.

This past weekend, Amber crossed another item off the list: Have a Singalong with Strangers. Take a look at some pictures and video from this awesome event after the jump.

Time Lapse Video from Around the World

// April 7th, 2010 // No Comments » // VIDEO

I am a sucker for time lapse videos. People are shooting some fantastic footage of landscapes, cityscapes, and everything in between. The video below is from a Vimeo group called “The Good Stuff,” and showcases some gorgeous time lapse footage from around the world. Shot by Sean Stiegemeier during his travels to locations like Prague, Japan, Banff, Utah, Oregon, and California using a Canon 5d Mark II DSLR camera, the video is sure to wake up the traveler in even the staunchest homebody.

VIDEO: Lincoln Canoe & Kayak Pool Sessions

When it comes to kayaking, my experience level resides somewhere between “I know how to hold the paddle,” and “Don’t let me drown, ok?” It’s people like me who need classes like the ones offered by Lincoln Canoe and Kayak’s Outdoor School. On a sunny, cold Sunday morning in February, I was afforded the opportunity to videotape one of Lincoln’s Kayak Skills pool sessions, where students were taught basic kayaking self-rescue and escape techniques.

The students ranged in age and experience. Some were well traveled paddlers aiming to brush up on their skills. Others were novices with little or no experience at all. No matter their skill level, all the paddlers were there to have fun and learn. Take a look at the video to see what they did!

VIDEO: The Path Less Pedaled Interviews – on learning to slow down

Our daily lives can be quite hectic without us even realizing it. Even if you take a vacation, you try to pack as many sights into a short period of time as you can because you see the end before the trip even begins. But when you have no firm end date in sight, when you don’t have to cram lots of things into a limited to-do list, it comes time for you to learn how to slow down.

In part 3 of my interviews with Laura and Russ of The Path Less Pedaled, they discuss coming to the realization that their freedom to choose comes with a price.

VIDEO: The Path Less Pedaled Interviews – the paring

Stuff.

Everybody has it, and most of us have too much. It hides in corners and under beds. It clutters our closets and our drawers. We hide stuff in pantries and under sinks and hell, right out in the open. Knicknacks, curios, trinkets, souvenirs, and thingamajigs fill our lives, and because we clean and neaten and straighten, most times we don’t even notice. That is, until it’s time to move. Then we realize just how much stuff we actually have.

When Russ and Laura of The Path Less Pedaled took the self-imposed directive to ride their bikes across the country indefinitely, they had no idea that the first challenge would show up right at home. In part two of the PTV interview, Russ and Laura talk about paring down their stuff to just what they need; a task not for the faint of heart.

VIDEO: The Path Less Pedaled Interviews – the decision

// February 22nd, 2010 // 1 Comment » // Feature, VIDEO

Some people are homebodies. Creating a close network of family and friends in a relatively small area keeps them grounded and safe. They have a local community to support them. This works for most people in life.

But some people find that their lives are lacking something in their current situation. Their worlds have been shaken up, and they need to do something more, something different. So when Laura Crawford, a jewelry maker, and Russ Roca, a photographer, decided to sell most of their belongings and fit the rest onto their bicycles, they had an idea that they would be pedaling indefinitely around the United States, in search of a life less ordinary.

In this episode of Part Time Vagabond, Russ and Laura of The Path Less Pedaled talk about how they came to the decision to leave it all behind for two wheels and the open road.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be posting some videos of an interview I did with Russ & Laura from PathLessPedaled.com. The interview was great, and I’m editing several segments for your viewing pleasure. I’m also in talks with several other amazing people who I’m going to interview and feature on PTV. In the meantime, here’s a little taste of what’s to come:
