Site Note: Advertising

// February 11th, 2010 // No Comments » // News

If you’re a regular to the Part Time Vagabond site, you may have noticed a new little widget in the sidebar. This is my Amazon Affiliate store, where you can purchase items from Amazon.com. But don’t worry, you won’t see car parts or books on knitting. This store is unique to PTV, as all the items are handpicked and recommended by yours truly.

I decided to put this affiliate store up – and indeed, I will start taking advertising clients soon – as a way to not only keep Part Time Vagabond moving forward, but to support both the site costs and the PTV video production costs. Seeing as right now, this (in addition to Filmosity Productions) is my full time job, I think it’s a good idea. So worry not, any advertising will be very much related to Part Time Vagabond.

Thanks for your support, and keep making your adventures happen!

Snowmageddon!

// February 10th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // News

Apparently, it’s been snowing. A lot.

Not here in Maine, mind you, where it’s supposed to snow a lot. Rather, the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest U.S. both have been getting pounded with snow for the past several days, the latest storm dumping another 10 or so inches on the previous 24-30 inches already on the ground. Being from New England, it’s a bit funny seeing people who normally don’t get this much snow go a little panicky over so much in the span of a few days. As evidence of this, my friend Gavin snapped a couple of shots of his local Baltimore grocery store, which people had ravaged in anticipation of not being able to…um, host a huge feast for 3 weeks? I don’t know, but they pretty much bought out everything in the store. Here are a few photos:

I never knew people needed so much meat during a snowstorm!

There used to be vegetables in here. Lots of them.

Roadcamp – A Social Media Roadtrip

// January 20th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // News

If you’ve read this blog enough, you should know by now that I love a good road trip. I love technology too; I’m a geek at heart. It should come as no surprise, then, that I am completely excited about a little project some of my friends have dreamed up. The good folks at Roadcamp.org are taking a trip from Montreal, Quebec to Austin, Texas on their way to the South by Southwest (SxSW) conference, holding workshops and get-togethers along the way. I had floated a similar idea with some of the participants a year ago or so, but I’m in no way taking credit for this project. In any case, Roadcamp is going to be a blast for all those involved.

From the Roadcamp.org website:

RoadCamp is going to be a tour bus packed of musicians, vloggers, bloggers, and developers that’s going to spend three days on the road travelling from Montreal to Austin to SXSW, the biggest music, film, and interactive festival we know of. Along the way, there will be Workshops and TweetUps and we’ll try to solve many of the problems facing many media industries today.

My sources tell me there’s some big news in the works, but since it’s still preliminary, I can’t say anything about it. If it happens, it’s going to be amazing. In any event, Roadcamp is the geek equivalent of a hippie roadtrip in a VW bus. But bigger. And wired. And less patchouli. Keep an eye out on the Roadcamp.org website and the @Roadcamp Twitter account for updates on the progress of the trip. This is going to be something to watch!

Outside Magazine getting a TV Network

According to this New York Times article, Mariah Media, the publishers of Outside Magazine, just bought the Resort Sports Network and will be transforming it to the Outside Television Network. I’m interested to see what kind of programming they put on the network and where it will be available. The last time a television network tried for outdoors programming (the Outdoor Life Network, or OLN), it failed and was converted to VS. It is good to see a focus on outdoors programming again. I mostly worry that it will play boring content that won’t hook anyone, the same ol’ same ol’ snowboarding-and-skateboarding-OMGACTIONSPORTS you can find on every other sports network in the world. Then again, it might just signal a renewed drive to get people interested in outdoors activities, which in my eyes is a very good thing.

For me, bike season is over…

// September 28th, 2009 // 4 Comments » // News

brokenspokeYes, it’s that time of year once again where the temperatures cool, the leaves begin to turn, and the summer fun gear gets put away. Usually, I can get away with riding my bike until early October, just about the time when I finally stop wearing shorts and start in with the long pants. Unfortunately, I’ve had to cut my bike riding season short this year, as I’ve broken two spokes on my rear wheel, rendering it effectively useless until I can find the money to have the wheel respoked and trued. This happened about two weeks ago, so I’ve been off my bike since then, and my body is rebelling about that. I knew when I popped the first spoke that I’d have to hurry to get the wheel fixed, but when I went out for a ride a few weeks ago, and I heard the “twhang” of snapping metal as my rear wheel started to wobble, I knew it was over. I may actually have to get the entire wheel rebuilt, as it seems the spokes are old enough that they’re breaking. That will cost me. So for now, my bike sits sans rear wheel, and I wait until I have enough saved to get it fixed. Who’s up for some skiing?

Help decide my next trip!

Now that the cooler temperatures of fall are making their presence known, it’s time to start planning a short fall trip. I have a few ideas of adventures I want to pursue, but I’m not sure which one to do. Being the indecisive tool that I am, I’m leaving it up to you, my dear and friendly reader. Bearing in mind a horrifying economy and a car that barely runs, I’m restricting my travels to northern New England this year. But hey, there’s a lot to do here! Let’s take a look at the options:

  • Kayaking or canoeing island hop trip on the Maine coast or Maine lakes
  • 4 day Backpacking trip in the White Mountains of New Hampshire
  • Road trip up scenic Route 1 in Maine, from Kittery to Fort Kent
  • Fall Foliage Bike Tour through…. (Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine?)
  • Other suggestions?
