ROADSIDE: El Cosmico – A Unique Lodging Experience

// March 31st, 2010 // No Comments » // ROADSIDE

When it comes to finding a place to stay during your travels, you have a few choices. Your car is one of them, but that can lead to back aches and parking tickets. You can check into a seedy motel, but you’ll probably be privy to things you never wanted to know. A pricey hotel might be nice, but it’s going to burn a hole in your pocket. What’s a weary traveler to do?

VIDEO: Lincoln Canoe & Kayak Pool Sessions

// March 29th, 2010 // No Comments » // VIDEO

When it comes to kayaking, my experience level resides somewhere between “I know how to hold the paddle,” and “Don’t let me drown, ok?” It’s people like me who need classes like the ones offered by Lincoln Canoe and Kayak’s Outdoor School. On a sunny, cold Sunday morning in February, I was afforded the opportunity to videotape one of Lincoln’s Kayak Skills pool sessions, where students were taught basic kayaking self-rescue and escape techniques.

The students ranged in age and experience. Some were well traveled paddlers aiming to brush up on their skills. Others were novices with little or no experience at all. No matter their skill level, all the paddlers were there to have fun and learn. Take a look at the video to see what they did!

Golden Gate Viewfinder - San Francisco, California

As a television cameraman, every so often, I get to go to some cool places and do some cool things. On this particular trip to San Francisco and Silicon Valley for the Hugh Thompson Show, we made trips to Google, Yahoo, and Sun Microsystems. But as any good traveler knows, it’s the unplanned events and places that make for the best memories. Like this one. I was shooting b-roll at the Golden Gate bridge, and we hit the spot right at Golden Hour. I snapped this shot on my phone. To this day, it remains the wallpaper on the very same phone. Nothing like a little good luck to make a trip worth it.

TRIP REPORT: Portland Trails – Fore River Sanctuary

// March 24th, 2010 // 2 Comments » // TRIP REPORT

Portland Trails SignSpring was definitely in the air last weekend in Maine, and I’d be damned if I wasn’t going to take advantage of warm temps and sunny skies. After hitting up a nice brunch, my friend Bryan and I set out for a leisurely hike on our local Portland Trails system at the Fore River Sanctuary.

Friday Snapshot: Las Vegas, Nevada

// March 19th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // SNAPSHOT

When you pull back from the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas, and drive past the towering skyscrapers and flashing lights, you find yourself at the foot of the Spring Mountains in the basin of the Mojave Desert. When you’re on the 23rd floor of the Luxor Hotel and are awake at 6AM because of a 3 hour time difference, you get to see a magnificent sunrise. Try it sometime, whether you’re awake from the time difference, or because you were up all night having a blast.

5 Simple Green Life-Changes

// March 17th, 2010 // No Comments » // Feature

It’s easy for those who embrace green living to make changes toward more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyles. But most people – Americans especially – have a very difficult time accepting those changes. Ask the average American why they won’t do certain eco-friendly activities, and you’ll get a wide range of excuses, from “It costs too much” to “I’m just too lazy.” Trying to convince people of the benefits of, say, recycling their bottles, can be a fruitless endeavor, as the attitudes they have are usually well-ingrained. The old adage, “Actions speak louder than words,” rings very true here. Instead of telling them what to do, help them get the tools they need to start going green.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

// March 17th, 2010 // No Comments » // GRUB

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! I hope everyone will take some time to enjoy the holiday and remember it’s true meaning – in between pints of Guinness of course! While the holiday is a great day to celebrate with friends at your local pub, drinking up pints of craft beer and gulping down an Irish Breakfast or corned beef & cabbage, it’s also a day to celebrate Irish heritage and culture.

Wikipedia has a nice article on the holiday, and here’s a little tidbit on the National Leprechaun Museum.

Nike ad asks “How quick are you going to get up?”

Ok, I’m not one to post a lot of ads on here, especially without getting paid for it, but this is just too cool not to share. This ad from Nike is pretty inspiring, but is also technologically and artistically cool. Take a look.
