Where would you travel with $1000?

I’ve been thinking about lightweight, low budget travel lately, trying to figure out how I can get some trips in over the winter despite my low income. It’s not easy these days, but those of us with the travel bug know that it’s nearly impossible to squash that little bugger.
So I pose this question to you: If you had $1000, where would you travel, what would you do, and how would you do it? (EDIT: I’m not really looking for trips for me to take. I wanted you to think about what YOU would do, where YOU’D want to go, and how YOU would spend the money!)

Id probably hitch hike anywhere the road took me and save the cash for food and digs. Doesn’t help you decide ‘where’ to go but maybe a method..
It all depends if you want to go to a city, or more rural/country/park area, or even international travel. For city travel, this is my suggestion. A few years back shortly after I had gotten out of college and had little money, a friend and I used something like Orbitz or Hotwire to book a vacation. We went to Chicago for 4 days, stayed in a luxury hotel (no joke, nicest hotel I’ve ever stayed in), and total cost for round-trip travel & hotel itself was $450. That left the rest for food and anything else we wanted to do. And if you explore the city without getting sucked into pricy tourist traps, you probably don’t need much ($50 a day max?). Prices have gone up in the past few years obviously, but I still would bet you can do that trip or one to any other major US city of your choosing for under $1000. I just like Chicago since it’s only a 1-hour time difference from the east coast. Really easy to avoid jetlag.
Oh, and by the way, I just did a quick search for packages from Boston to Chicago on kayak.com (great travel site, in my opinion), and 3- & 4-star hotels are showing up from $425 to $550 for a Monday – Thursday in January stay.
Now, I’ll have to think about those other 2 options and get back to you.
I should probably have written this article differently. I’m asking what YOU would do! But some good answers so far.
Will, that sounds like something great to do in Europe or the U.S. Kind of an iconic trip, no?
Sara, Thanks for the tips. So the question is, where would YOU go if you had $1000 to spend?
If I had extra $1000 right now I would head down to California and spend some time on the beach. I’ve always wanted to learn to surf, but not in the Washington waters. To get there I’d take my time cruising down highway 101. I’d have to do some more research but I’d stay in my tent as I traveled. I like it more than a hotel anyway. Keep us posted on where you do decide to go when that travel bug overwhelms you.
Thanks for the response Casey! That sounds like a good trip to me too, and I actually want to do a bike tour down the Pacific coast some day. I’m not really a surfer, but I think I’d give it a try.
